Maine Lottery
The citizens of Maine approved a statewide referendum to introduce the Maine Lottery in 1973. Just a year later, state lottery tickets went on sale for a weekly draw that was dubbed, “Play Me.” Since its very first draw in 1974, this state lottery has paid out more than $2 billion in prizes to winners, over $330 million in sales commissions to lottery ticket retailers, and almost $2 billion to the State Government’s General Fund. The funds are used to benefit the citizens of Maine, including health services, colleges, and local schools, amongst other initiatives.
Since 1996, the Maine Lottery has transferred close to $20 million to the Outdoor Heritage Fund, a fund that helps important wildlife and conservation projects in the state.
Residents of Maine can currently take part in Lotto America, Lucky for Life, Megabucks Plus, Powerball, Mega Millions, plus daily games and more.
