It seems the Puerto Rico lottery doesn’t quite get the recognition it deserves. However, the Loteria de Puerto Rica is the oldest known modern American lottery. Yet, since the state isn’t on the mainland, it’s very often overlooked. Many people tend to give New Hampshire the credit for being the first modern US lottery, but truth be told, the Puerto Rico Lottery has been around since 1934. That’s a whole 30 years before the New Hampshire lottery!
Since it started, the different lottery games in PR have changed considerably. Today, there are 6 different lottery games on offer in Puerto Rico, including the most popular game, Loto Plus, which often dishes out multi-million dollar jackpots. There’s also Powerball, Doble Revancha, and Pega 2, 3, and 4.
Interestingly, Loto Plus and Doble Revancha are linked. To play Doble Revancha, you must play Lotto. If you don’t win with your PR Lotto numbers, you might just scoop a jackpot with Doble Revancha, aptly meaning “revenge!”.
Puerto Rico became the 45th lottery to sell Powerball tickets in 2014.
