In 4th spot on our list: William “Bud” Post II of Pennsylvania:
While winning a $16,200,000 jackpot was indeed the high point of Bud’s life when he hit it in 1988. In 1989 his brother hired a hitman to kill Post and his wife. Later in 1989 he was successfully sued by his former landlady/girlfriend for 1/3 of the winnings, since he’d originally given the winning ticket to her. When Bud passed away in 2006 it’s reported that he was collecting welfare.
